Launch of TS Duke of York, London Midland and Scottish railways poster. By Norman Wilkinson

Product code: S-895

Product information

Vintage shipping poster produced for the London Midland & Scottish Railway (LMS) to promote services to the launch of the 'Ts Duke of York' at the Queen's Island shipyard, Belfast, Northern Ireland. This steamer was built by Harland and Wolff and was launched by the LMS on 7 March 1935, for operation on the Heysham to Belfast route. It became a troop transport vesel during WWII and was involved in the Dieppe raid of August 1942. Artwork by Norman Wilkinson (1878-1971), who studied art at Portsmouth and Southsea Schools of Art. A famous marine painter, he designed posters for the London & North Western Railway (LNWR), the London & Midlands Railway (LMR) and Southern Railway (SR).

This is truly an outstanding quality poster. It is printed on Fuji crystal archive photographic paper and is by no means a flimsy poster.
