Product information
Travel Poster produced for the Southern Railways (SR) in 1935 to promote daily train and air services between Heston Airport in London and the Isle of Wight in Hampshire, a 40 minute journey. The stunning aerial view captures various sailing vessels just off the coastline with a Spartan Cruiser III aeroplane making its descent. Spartan Air Lines Ltd was a British private airline company, in the period 1933-1935. It started operating passenger services from the London area to the Isle of Wight in collaboration with Railway Air Services. In late 1935 it merged with United Airways to form British Airways Ltd. Artwork by Charles Pears (1873-1958), a marine painter in oil who was an Official Naval Artist during the World Wars. He worked as a poster artist for rail companies and other clients and was also a book illustrator.
