Whitley Bay, Tyne & Wear, Northumberland. LNER Vintage Travel Poster by Frank Newbould

Product code: S-464

Product information

Vintage travel poster produced in 1939 for the London & North Eastern Railway (LNER). It was designed specifically to encourage rail travel to Whitley Bay, a favourite summer holiday destination for generations of people. The poster shows a young couple on the beautiful sandy beach, smiling at a small white dog. The woman is dressed in a red swimming costume and seated on a towel while the man wearing a blue bathing gown smokes a cigarette. The dog is playfully holding a toy spade in its mouth. In the background the famous white dome of Spanish City can be seen. Artwork by Frank Newbould (1887-1951), who studied at Bradford College of Art and joined the War Office in 1942. He also designed posters for the GWR (Great Western Railway), Orient Line and Belgian Railways.

This is truly an outstanding quality poster. It is printed on Fuji crystal archive photographic paper and is by no means a flimsy poster.
