Product information
British Railways (BR) produced this poster in 1951 to help promote train services to Whitley Bay, Tyne and Wear. The artist has chosen St Marys Island (also known as Bait Island) just north of Whitley Bay and St Marys lighthouse as his subject. The lighthouse was built in 1897-8 and ceased to be active in 1984. It is currently a natural history museum and visitor centre. In the foreground is a man and two small children exploring a rockpool. One child holds a piece of seaweed, while the other fishes in the pool with a net. Artwork by Frederick Donald Blake.
