Este cartaz da Primeira Guerra Mundial pertence a uma série do artista tcheco Vojtech Preissig (1873 a 1944), que incentivou voluntários tchecos e eslovacos que moravam nos Estados Unidos a lutarem com a Legião da Tchecoslováquia contra a Áustria-Hungria e Alemanha. Ele mostra um soldado sobre um cavalo, carregando a bandeira dos hussitas, seguidores do reformador religioso tcheco Jan Hus (1369 a 1415, aproximadamente). Depois, estudou e trabalhou em Paris e Praga, antes de se mudar para os Estados Unidos, em 1910. De 1912 a 1916, lecionou na Art Students’ League e na Universidade Columbia, em Nova York. De 1916 a 1926, dirigiu a Escola de Gravuras e Artes Gráficas do Wentworth Institute, em Boston. Este cartaz foi desenhado e impresso no instituto e distribuído pela Agência de Recrutamento Tcheca, em Nova York.

This World War I poster belongs to a series of Czech artist Vojtech Preissig (1873-1944), who encouraged volunteer Czechs and Slovaks living in the United States to fight the Legion of Czechoslovakia against Austria-Hungary and Germany. It shows a soldier on a horse, carrying the flag of the Hussites, followers of the Czech religious reformer Jan Hus (1369-1415, approximately). Should read in The Czech lands and Slovakia were, at the time part of Austria-Hungary and leaders of the national movement for independence believed that the cause of an independent state of Czechoslovakia could be strengthened by fighting alongside the Allies. In December 1917, the French government approved the organization of an independent Czech army on French soil. A regiment of rifles from Czechoslovakia, established with volunteers from Russia, Romania, United States, Italy and Serbia was fighting with the 53th Infantry Division French. Preissig was born in the Czech portion of Austria-Hungary. From 1892 to 1896 he studied in Prague, School of Industrial Arts Applied. Then studied and worked in Paris and Prague, before moving to the United States in 1910. From 1912 to 1916 he taught at the Art Students' League and Columbia University in New York. From 1916 to 1926, directed the School of Graphic Arts and prints of Wentworth Institute in Boston. This poster was designed and printed and distributed by the Institute Recruitment Agency Republic, in New York.
